The Hidden Costs of a Deal: Shipping, Returns, and Warranties
2026-09-22
The sticker price is not the real price
Two listings for the same product can show similar prices but cost very different amounts once everything is added up. Before deciding a deal is good, work out the total you will actually pay and the risk you are taking on.
1. Shipping and handling
Check whether shipping is free, flat-rate, or calculated at checkout. On large or heavy items such as power tools, vacuums, and appliances, shipping can erase much of a discount.
2. Sales tax
Most online orders now include sales tax. It is added at checkout, so compare prices on a before-tax basis and remember the final number will be higher.
3. Return policy
Look for how many days you have to return the item, whether returns are free, and whether a restocking fee applies. A cheaper item with no returns carries more risk than a slightly pricier one with free returns.
4. Warranty
New items usually carry the full manufacturer warranty. Refurbished and used items may have a shorter warranty, a seller-only warranty, or none. Find out who you would contact if the item fails.
5. Missing accessories
Tools listed as "tool only" do not include batteries or chargers. Electronics may ship without cables or remotes. Adding those parts separately can make a deal much less attractive.
A simple checklist
- Item price + shipping + estimated tax = real cost.
- Compare that real cost with at least two other sellers.
- Confirm the return window and who pays return shipping.
- Confirm the warranty length and who provides it.
- Confirm what is actually in the box.
A deal is only a deal if it still looks good after these checks.
